Kids born in 2018 were 20% more likely to be diagnosed with cerebral palsy by age 4 than children born in 2014. This suggests recent efforts to catch CP earlier may be working.

About the Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis Study

When Is Cerebral Palsy Diagnosed in Babies?
Cerebral palsy is usually not diagnosed at birth. Most children are diagnosed between 12 and 24 months of age, although some are diagnosed earlier and others not until they are older.
Doctors and specialists review a child's medical history, developmental progress, muscle tone, reflexes, posture, and movement patterns to determine whether CP may be present. Doctors can increasingly identify CP earlier in childhood, especially in babies at higher risk.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends developmental screening at 9, 18, and 30 months, with particular attention to motor milestones and muscle tone.
Signs such as abnormal muscle tone, early hand preference, difficulty sitting independently, or asymmetric crawling can prompt further evaluation for CP.
How Is Cerebral Palsy Diagnosed in Babies?
No single test can diagnose cerebral palsy. Instead, doctors make a clinical diagnosis by looking at a child's movement, muscle tone, reflexes, posture, developmental progress, and neurological signs, along with the child's medical history.
In some cases, brain imaging and standardized developmental or neurological assessments can help confirm the diagnosis or identify signs of CP at a very young age.
- Brain imaging, particularly an MRI, to look for evidence of brain injury or abnormal development
- Developmental and motor assessments to evaluate movement and motor skills
- General Movements Assessment (GMA) to evaluate an infant's spontaneous movements
- Medical and developmental history to identify risk factors and patterns consistent with CP
- Neurological examinations, including tools such as the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE)
After a diagnosis, doctors may use the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) to describe how CP affects a child's movement.
Because CP can be detected before a child reaches the age when a formal diagnosis was traditionally made, experts now recommend early evaluation when there are clear signs or risk factors.
Combining standardized movement and neurological assessments with MRI can detect CP accurately in some high-risk infants as early as the first few months of life.
Cerebral Palsy and Birth Injury Malpractice
An earlier diagnosis often leads families to ask why their child has cerebral palsy. In some cases, the answer involves a preventable birth injury.
