Remembering RJ Mitte: Breaking Bad Star and CP Advocate
The cerebral palsy community is mourning the loss of actor and disability rights advocate RJ Mitte, who passed away on October 12, 2026, at just 34 years old.
Best known for playing Walter White Jr. on the award-winning television series Breaking Bad, Mitte lived with cerebral palsy (CP) and spent much of his life advocating for greater disability awareness, acceptance, and inclusion.
“People perceive disability as a weakness, as an illness, as something that needs to be cured, and we have to fight against that.”
– RJ Mitte, Breaking Bad Star and CP Advocate
At Cerebral Palsy Guide, we join those mourning this heartbreaking loss and remembering the impact Mitte made through his acting and advocacy.
RJ Mitte’s Journey With Cerebral Palsy
Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at about 3 years old. As a child, he underwent physical, occupational, and speech therapy to improve his movement and communication.
He spoke openly about his childhood experiences, including treatments to address toe walking, a common symptom of cerebral palsy.
In a 2014 personal essay, Mitte reflected on his childhood and the encouragement he received from his grandfather:
"I have cerebral palsy (CP) but I've never let it hold me back. Thinking back maybe this was a lesson I learnt from my granddad, who was a Marine.
When I was growing up, I was never allowed to say the words 'no', 'can't', 'won't' - it was always yes, yes sir!
So whenever I heard people tell me I'd never walk or talk properly, I would always hear his voice, telling me you can and you will!"
That encouragement stayed with Mitte as he pursued acting and eventually became a recognizable voice for people living with disabilities.
Breaking Barriers in Hollywood and Beyond
Mitte was just a teenager when he landed his breakthrough role on Breaking Bad, playing a character who also had cerebral palsy.
His performance helped increase visibility for actors with disabilities and challenged assumptions about the roles they could play. And his advocacy extended well beyond television.
He supported organizations including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, where he had received care as a child. He later served as a patient ambassador and helped raise awareness about bullying.
Mitte also used his public platform to encourage greater opportunities and representation for people with disabilities.
"That’s really the greatest thing that ‘Breaking Bad’ has given me is to be able to lend my voice to causes that make a meaningful impact, that changes people’s lives."
– RJ Mitte
Honoring RJ Mitte’s Legacy
Mitte's death by suicide is a heartbreaking loss and a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, compassion, and accessible support for everyone.
Having cerebral palsy does not define a person's emotional well-being. People with disabilities have the same need as anyone else to feel heard, supported, and understood.
Mitte dedicated much of his life to helping others see beyond disability and recognize every person's abilities, ambitions, and individuality.
At Cerebral Palsy Guide, we remember RJ Mitte not only for his accomplishments as an actor, but also for the opportunities he helped create and the people he encouraged along the way.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone mourning his loss. His voice and advocacy will not be forgotten.
